JOSSELIN

The area around the house offers lots of interesting places to visit and things to do. The local towns include the medieval market town of Josselin, Ploermel where the Lac au Duc provides excellent water sports facilities, Malestroit, Rochefort-en-Terre, Vannes and Rennes.

Facilities available within a short drive of the house include: golf, horse riding, walking, cycling, canal boat day or hourly hire, go-karting (at Guillac), sailing, kayaking, water ski-ing, windsurfing, swimming pools, tree climbing trails, ten pin bowling and so on.

Josselin is an attractive medieval town in a lovely setting on the Nantes to Brest canal. There are good quality paths along the canal which are ideal for either walking or cycling. You will find flower decked lock houses along the canal and regular 'halts' with picnic tables, benches or even a boules pitch.

In the summer you can hire kayaks or other boats for trips along the Nantes-Brest Canal at Josselin and boats also available at Malestroit. During the summer months cycle hire is available in Josselin from the car park adjoining the canal near the chateau.

The chateau itself is an impressive building and home to a dolls museum. The chateau is open to tourists although it is still used as a family home.On Saturdays there is a local market with fresh and handmade local products.

Rochefort-en-Terre is “must visit” for anyone new to the area. There are plenty of places to eat and some lovely little shops to browse in (including Cath's favourite selling baskets). It is a wonderful place to spend a few hours and is about 30 minutes to the south-east of the house.

Vannes is a fantastic town with great shopping and a picturesque harbour area.  A visit to the market on a Wednesday or Saturday morning is essential. There is a walk around the picturesque old town and ramparts which is worth doing and a small land train that takes you around the town. Vannes is a lovely place to spend a day and is close to the beaches on either side of the Golfe du Morbihan.

Rennes is the capital of Brittany. It is a wonderful city, great for shopping and eating out. The market is very good as well and is open most days The football club are in the French top division (Ligue Un) and their stadium is easily accessible as it is on the road into Rennes from the house.

La Gacilly is a lovely small town about 30 minutes to the south east of the house towards Redon. It is home to Yves Rocher and every year between June and September it is home to a photographic exhibition whereby the whole town becomes an art gallery. The photographs are mounted on the buildings and in the public spaces as very large exhibits. There is an excellent and marked cycle ride starting from the car park by the bridge over the river close to Yves Rocher. The Vegetarium restaurant is a great place for lunch especially if you can get a table outside.

Ploermel is home to the Lac au Duc which provides water sport facilities to anyone who wants to use them. You can hire sailing dinghies including catamarans, kayaks, wind surfing boards or pedalos by the hour or have a go at water ski-ing. There is  a large picnic area, volleyball and tennis courts (free to use), a water slide area and a cafe.

Ile aux Moines is a small island in the Golfe de Morbihan. It is well worth a day's trip. You get to it via a 5 minute ferry ride from Port Blanc near Larmor Baden to the west of Vannes. There is free parking at Port Blanc and you take the ferry across (5 Euros) so there is very little traffic on the island. Only the locals have cars and then only a few of them have them. You can take bikes on the ferry (4 Euros) and it is worth doing that as it enables you to access the beaches towards the south of the small island a lot quicker. It is like going back 50 years.
